8,774 kg of shrimps confiscated during ban season
Head of Legal Affairs of the Coast Guard, Captain Nayef Isa Al Shaikh, said that 8,774 kilogrammes of shrimps were confiscated during the shrimp fishing ban from March 1 to July 31.
He said that the Coast Guard carried inspections to ensure the law enforcement of the ban in attempt to protect the marine wealth and the environment, including limiting the use of illegal fishing nets that harm the coral reefs.
He highlighted that the cases were referred to the Public Prosecution, while the seized shrimps were sold in public auctions, and the revenue deposited into the Public Prosecution account. He urged the public to cooperate with the authorities to protect the marine environment by not purchasing fresh shrimps during the ban season.
He said prior to the ban season, the Coast Guard holds meetings with security directorates and concerned authorities to inform them of the shrimp breeding areas and the related violations, while inspection campaigns are held throughout the ban period.
