Allawi calls for the protection of the people of Basra and warns of dire consequences of the slowdown in resolving the current crisis
BAGHDAD, The Head of the National Coalition Iyad Allawi called to speed up the treatment of the situation in Basra province calmly and set specific timetables to meet the demands of the demonstrators, especially the basic ones and to find solutions to existing problems without delay.
He warned in a press statement that "the silence or the slowdown in resolving the crisis in Basra will have dire consequences at this difficult stage in Iraq." He said that "the situation in Basra is getting worse and is waiting for bold and courageous decisions that can contribute to restoring calm to the province."
Allawi also called on the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to protect the people of Basra and hold accountable the perpetrators of the killing of demonstrators, surprising "Did it matter to the sons of Basra to pay dear blood to demand the provision of the simplest requirements for a decent life."
Six demonstrators were killed and more than 20 others injured after a demonstration broke out in front of the Basra governorate building.
Sources said that the Commander of the Swat squadron and a number of soldiers were wounded while security forces imposed a curfew throughout the province.
