Aoun sends condolences cable to Guterres on Annan’s death: He was supportive of our nation’s unity and the safety of its land
President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, sent a cable of condolences on Saturday to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the death of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who served as Assistant UN Secretary-General before he was appointed Secretary-General in 1997 and remained in office until 2006.
"With deep sorrow, I heard the news of the death of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, after years of contributing to peace and security in the world," said Aoun.
"Throughout these difficult years in the history of modern Lebanon, he has supported the unity of our nation and the safety of its land, and has been an active factor in establishing peace in it, especially through the UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon," the President added.
"He always stressed his hope for the future of Lebanon and its role in the region and the world and thanks to that has had a special place in the conscience of many Lebanese," Aoun concluded.
