Indonesian quake death toll at 1,763 with about 5,000 unaccounted for

Jakarta, The death toll from earthquakes and a tsunami that

hit Indonesia's Sulawesi island has risen to 1,763, the country's

disaster management agency said Sunday, according to dpa.

Another estimated 5,000 people from Petobo and Balaroa - two villages where homes were sucked into a sinkhole and mud during the September 28 earthquake - remained unaccounted for, said agency spokesman Sutopo Nugroho.

"If they are not found as of October 11, they will be declared missing," he said.

The coordinating minister for security, Wiranto, has said that the government is considering converting the two villages into mass graves.
