Kanaan after ‘Strong Lebanon’ meeting: Government formation responsibility of PM-designate and President

MP Ibrahim Kanaan maintained that the formation of the new government was in the hands of the Prime Minister-designate and the President of the republic as stated by the Constitution.

"The initiative to produce solutions is not in our hands," Kanaan told reporters following the Strong Lebanon parliamentary bloc's weekly meeting, held under the chairmanship of Caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.

"The key role is that of the Prime Minister-designate, and the formation decree is in the hands of the President of the republic," he explained, rejecting attempts to accuse Bassil of obstructing the process.

"We did not put any veto on allocating a sovereign portfolio to the Lebanese Forces," Kanaan added.

"Our presence inside the Parliament will not be formal; our bloc will make a difference," he underlined.

He also maintained that economy was a major challenge in the country and a top priority for the bloc.
