Arab Summit starts 30th session in Tunisia 2 Tunis

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Kings, Presidents, and Heads of Arab States' delegations headed to the main hall. The summit began with a recitation of verses from the Holy Quran.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques delivered the following speech:

President of the Republic of Tunisia, Beji Caid Essebsi,

Your Majesties, Highnesses, Excellencies,

Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit,

I thank the sisterly Republic of Tunisia, under the leadership of President Beji Caid Essebsi, for hosting this summit and for the warm reception and generous hospitality. I also thank brothers in Arab countries and the General Secretariat for their cooperation with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during its presidency of the Arab Summit, during which we were keen to advance the process of the joint Arab action to achieve the aspirations of our peoples.

The Palestinian cause will remain at the top of the Kingdom's concerns until the Palestinian people have all their legitimate rights, foremost of which is the establishment of their independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem (AlQuds) as its capital, based on the resolutions of the international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.

We reiterate our total rejection of any measures that would infringe Syrian sovereignty over the Golan. We stress the importance of reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis that ensures Syria's security, unity and sovereignty, and the prevention of foreign interference, in accordance with the Geneva Declaration 1 and Security Council resolution No. 2254.

On the Yemeni affair, we reiterate our support for the efforts of the United Nations to reach a political solution in accordance with the three references. We call on the international community to compel Iran-backed Houthi Militias to stop their aggressive practices that have caused the sufferings of the Yemeni people and threatened the security and stability of the region.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will continue to implement its humanitarian and development aid programs to alleviate the sufferings of the Yemeni people.

With regard to the Libyan crisis, the Kingdom emphasizes the keenness on the unity of Libya and its territorial integrity, and supports the efforts of the United Nations to reach a political solution that will achieve Libya's security and stability and eliminate the terrorism threatening it.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to support efforts to combat terrorism and extremism at all levels. The terrorist act that targeted two mosques in New Zealand confirms that terrorism is not linked to religion, race or homeland.

The aggressive policies of the Iranian regime constitute a flagrant violation of all international charters and principles. The international community must shoulder its responsibilities to confront these policies and stop Iranian regime's support for terrorism in the world.

Despite the challenges facing our Arab nation, we are optimistic about a promising future that will achieve the hopes of our peoples in glory and pioneership.

In conclusion, I pray to Allah Almighty to crown the works of this Summit with all success, wishing President Beji Caid Essebsi success in presiding the Summit."

Then, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques handed over the presidency of the current summit to President Beji Caid Essebsi of the Republic of Tunisia.
