Khoury says decision to ban import of Turkish biscuits, detergents strictly economic

Caretaker Minister of Economy and Trade, Raed Khoury, said on Monday that the Lebanese government's decision to ban the import of Turkish biscuits and detergents into Lebanon was a strictly economic one, with no political background whatsoever.

The Minister's words came during a joint meeting at the Ministry of Economy between the technical teams of the Lebanese and Turkish Ministries of Economy and Trade, chaired by Minister Khoury, whereas heading the Turkish delegation had been Turkish Ambassador to Lebanon, Hakan ?akil.

"This decision aims to protect domestic products, particularly in light of the dire economic situation in Lebanon," Khoury explained. The Lebanese side also stressed the need to question the commercial balance between the two countries in a bid to mitigate deficit and try to increase Lebanese exports to Turkey.

Both two sides finally agreed to reactivate the joint Lebanese-Turkish commission, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations at all levels.
