Tunisia president Kais Saied thinks history is on his side

In July 2021 Tunisian president Kais Saied decided to freeze parliament. He revoked his prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and effectively took total control of the executive and legislative branches of power, causing a constitutional crisis. This power grab was his answer to the frustration brewing in the streets in the face of a worsening economic crisis following the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the political standstill between the presidency and the main opposition party Ennahda.
