Turkish Air Strikes On PKK Sites In Northern Iraq
BAGHDAD, Turkish warplanes carried out raids on opposition sites in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq on Saturday and today.
"The fighter jets targeted yesterday and today the positions of the PKK " in Amrali region of Mardin, southeast of Turkey, and in Sinat Heftenin region in northern Iraq, "a Turkish statement said.
"The air strikes neutralized eight terrorists from the organization," it said.
Turkish warplanes, in cooperation with the Turkish security services and police, have been cracking down PKK elements inside and outside the country for two years to crack down on the organization, which Turkey says is carrying out terrorist attacks against Turkish civilians and soldiers in various Turkish states.
The PKK, seen by the United States, the European Union and Turkey as a terrorist organization, has waged a three-decade insurgency in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast, killing 40,000 people.
