Jeddah-- A faculty member of the Department of Laboratory Technology at the College of Applied Medical Sciences at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Dr. Aisha Alimi, takes first place winning the "Grand Prize" and the gold medal for her invention in "Detecting abnormalities in some chromosomes in fertilized embryos" across the Middle East, at the 13th International Invention Fair in the Middle East (IIFME), held in Kuwait.

The competition witnessed the participation of 235 male and female inventors representing 40 Arab and foreign countries.

The project obtained a patent in the medical field from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

A simplified diagnostic medical examination represents the invention to detect abnormalities in some chromosomes of fertilized embryos outside the womb before implantation during the IVF process.

The examination can also be applied in detecting fetal ailments during pregnancy to ensure their safety before birth. Thus the medical intervention contributes to helping many families in need of fetal examinations at affordable costs.
