Abdallah Calls for Consensus President to Address Lebanese Parties’ Concerns

Abdallah: MP Bilal Abdallah emphasized the need for a consensus president to alleviate the concerns of Lebanese parties. He highlighted that the Democratic Gathering bloc is advocating for breaking the intense divisions within the parliament. Abdallah underscored the importance of electing a president who can reassure political factions, resume reforms, and foster Lebanon’s connection with the Arab world. He noted the bloc’s support for Army Chief, General Joseph Aoun, as a potential candidate.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Abdallah expressed uncertainty regarding the outcome of the upcoming electoral session in an interview with “Voice of All Lebanon 93.3” Radio Channel. He mentioned that while he does not wish to speculate, there are signals from various factions suggesting that if a particular option gains traction, there might be moves to postpone or cancel the session. Despite this, Abdallah assured that the Democratic Gathering bloc would not disrupt the quorum and remains committed to the principle of consensus, which he believes is essential for governing Lebanon.

Abdallah also commented on the role of international efforts and the influx of foreign delegates to Beirut ahead of the session. He acknowledged the assistance from the international community but emphasized that the ultimate responsibility lies with Lebanese internal awareness. Abdallah called on all political blocs to fulfill their duties, at least at a basic level, to ensure progress and stability in Lebanon.
