Complete Quran: Pages Showcasing Mastery of Arabic Calligraphy, Bookbinding, Gilding

Riyadh: A complete Quran displayed at the Holy Quran Museum in the Hira Cultural District in Makkah offers a remarkable example of the care Muslims devoted in earlier eras to writing, decorating, and binding the Holy Quran. It combines the beauty of Arabic calligraphy with precise composition and the arts of ornamentation and gilding.

According to Saudi Press Agency, written in black ink, the Quran is displayed open on facing pages beginning with Surat Al-Fatihah. Its pages feature precise Arabic calligraphy and intricate decorative details, including gilded separators and floral motifs that complement the Quranic text without overpowering it. The craftsmanship extends to the dark-brown binding, which features embossed decoration and an elegant medallion.

The Quran is part of the museum's diverse collection of manuscripts, Qurans, and artifacts documenting the history and arts of the Holy Quran. The collection includes examples from different stages in the history of writing and recording the Quran, various Arabic scripts used in Quranic manuscripts, and examples of ornamentation, gilding, and binding, as well as traditional writing and copying tools.

Among the museum's most prominent holdings are rare historic Qurans, including examples written in Kufic script and others featuring ornamented and gilded pages. The collection also includes the Blue Quran, whose verses were written in gold on dark-blue pages.
