Riyadh: Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah received Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand today in Riyadh. The meeting underscored the positive and growing bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and Canada, which have spanned more than five decades.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the foreign ministers affirmed their commitment to advancing and diversifying economic growth, enhancing regional and international security, and promoting global peace. They highlighted the trade relations between the two countries, noting that the trade volume exceeded SAR12 billion in 2024. The ministers welcomed the establishment of the Saudi-Canadian Business Council, emphasizing its role in strengthening economic cooperation. They also noted progress in ongoing negotiations concerning an agreement to promote and protect foreign investment.
The two ministers lauded the convening of the second Saudi-Canadian Educational Partnership Forum, which took place on March 30. In their discussions, they emphasized the significance of enhancing relations across various fields, particularly in sectors like trade, investment, space, artificial intelligence, mining, tourism, education, and pharmaceuticals. They agreed on the importance of deepening bilateral relations and strengthening the comprehensive partnership between their countries.
The discussions also touched upon regional challenges. Both ministers condemned Iran's destabilizing behavior, including its attacks on Saudi Arabia and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. They called for Iran to cease its aggressive actions and respect international law, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026). The ministers stressed the need for Iran to stop supporting, financing, and arming militias in Arab countries, which undermine regional and international peace and security.
Minister Anand expressed Canada's solidarity with Saudi Arabia and appreciated the Kingdom's assistance in facilitating the repatriation of Canadian citizens. She reaffirmed Canada's readiness to collaborate closely with Saudi Arabia to enhance regional stability and protect civilians amid ongoing conflicts in the Gulf and the Middle East.
The meeting concluded with both ministers recognizing the importance of international efforts to de-escalate tensions, enhance maritime and energy security, and protect critical infrastructure. Minister Anand expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality, reaffirming Canada's commitment to strengthening a forward-looking strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia.
