Iraqi Siamese Twins “Omar and Ali” Successfully Separated in an 11-hour Complex Surgery

Riyadh, January 12, 2023 AD, SPA — At the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and HRH the Crown Prince, the specialized surgical team managed to separate the Iraqi Siamese twins, Omar and Ali, who were attached to the lower chest and abdomen, and share the liver, bile ducts, and intestines, after a complex surgery that lasted 11 hours and was operated in six phases, with the participation of a 27-member team of consultants, specialists, nursing and technical staff.

Advisor at the Royal Court, Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), and head of the medical team, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, explained that this operation comes in implementation of the generous directives of the Saudi leadership, which accounts for the 54th of the Saudi program for the separation of conjoined twins.

He added that the Saudi program was able, during the past 32 years, to operate on 127 Siamese twins from 23 countries, stressing the Kingdom’s pioneering role in humanitarian work in general and medical work in particular. Dr. Al-Rabeeah thanked the medical team who performed the surgery for their efforts, stressing that this achievement reflects the wise leadership’s keenness to help people wherever they are. He added that it also reflects the Saudi medical excellence, which comes in line with the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 to develop the health sector in the Kingdom and advance its quality and efficiency.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, extended, in his name and on behalf of his fellow members of the medical team, the appreciation and gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and HRH the Crown Prince for the generous support received by the Saudi program for the separation of conjoined twins.

Iraqi Ambassador to the Kingdom, Dr. Abdul-Sattar Hadi Al-Janabi, appreciated the unlimited humanitarian support and efforts provided by the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and HRH, the Crown Prince, praising the efforts of the medical team led by Dr. Al-Rabeeah, and expressing his great happiness for the successful separation surgery of the Iraqi twins “Omar and Ali”.

The Twins’ parents extended their thanks and gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince for the distinguished medical team’s operation to separate the twins and provide them with the necessary treatment, praising the Kingdom’s great humanitarian work, and the Saudi warm reception and hospitality they have received throughout their stay in the Kingdom.
