KAMC Performs Saudi Arabia’s First Intraoperative Electron Radiotherapy for Brain Tumor

Makkah: King Abdullah Medical City (KAMC), affiliated with the Makkah Health Cluster, has successfully performed Saudi Arabia’s first intraoperative electron radiotherapy (IOERT) procedure to treat a recurrent high-grade brain tumor. The milestone aligns with the activation of the urgent care system under Saudi Arabia’s new healthcare model.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the 66-year-old patient presented with reduced consciousness and left hemiplegia. Detailed imaging and diagnostic assessments revealed a recurrent high-grade glioma, necessitating urgent surgical intervention to remove the tumor.

During surgery, IOERT was applied directly in the operating room, allowing precise targeting of residual tumor cells while minimizing the risk of recurrence.

KAMC stated that the procedure was conducted under the supervision of a specialized surgical team in collaboration with radiation oncology specialists, supported by medical physics, anesthesia, and nursing teams.

The patient showed significant postoperative improvement, gradually regaining consciousness and motor function, and was discharged after one week walking normally with no notable complications.
