Large Salmon Arab Butterfly Highlights Biodiversity in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders

Baku:The large salmon Arab butterfly, known for its vibrant colors and intricate wing patterns, is a testament to the rich biodiversity found in Saudi Arabia's desert and semi-desert environments. This butterfly thrives in the natural habitats of the Northern Borders Region, which is characterized by its valleys, plains, and seasonal wild plants.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the butterfly is scientifically named Colotis fausta and is part of the Pieridae family, which includes white and yellow butterflies. Its wings display a striking combination of creamy white and salmon-orange hues, with dark edges and markings that enhance its appearance as it flutters among plants and wildflowers.

These butterflies are most active in warm, sunny conditions and are found in open environments, particularly in valleys and areas rich in suitable plants for feeding and reproduction. Adult butterflies are nectar feeders, while their larvae rely on plants from the caper family, including the caper plant, known locally as shaflah.

Butterflies like the large salmon Arab play a crucial role in wildlife ecosystems, underscoring the need to protect desert habitats and preserve their natural components for future generations.
