Riyadh: The Northern Borders region of Saudi Arabia, encompassing approximately 104,000 square kilometers, is witnessing a flourishing lavender population, adding to its rich biodiversity of seasonal and annual plants. These plants are essential for sustainable development, playing a role in combating desertification, increasing vegetation cover, stabilizing soil, and promoting ecotourism. Lavender has notably emerged as a key species among the region’s flora.

According to Saudi Press Agency, lavender, with its distinctive fragrance and vibrant purple color, has been spotted along the edge of the Nafud desert, indicating its potential spread throughout the area. This emergence underscores the region’s ecological importance and its ability to nurture varied plant life.

Nasser Al-Majlad, head of the Aman Environmental Association, informed an SPA reporter that the lavender species is Horwoodia dicksoniae. This annual herbaceous plant features branching stems that typically grow to about 30 centimeters in height, with large, lobed leaves. Its dark lilac flowers form spike inflorescences, emitting a unique fragrance.

The plant thrives in shallow sandy loam soil and is highly valued for its ornamental appeal, making it a popular choice for cultivation in homes and gardens. Its smooth brown seeds aid in its propagation.

Al-Majlad noted the beneficial impact of nature reserves and the Saudi Green Initiative on the region’s environment. These initiatives have supported afforestation, land reclamation, and the protection of wild areas, which have contributed to the resurgence of various trees and plants, including lavender, within the ecological landscape.
