Najran’s Historic Mud-Brick Architecture Attracts Tourists

Najran:The ancient mud-brick houses and palaces of Najran are outstanding examples of architectural ingenuity, where simple earth has been transformed into enduring symbols of cultural identity. These structures are adorned with intricate geometric patterns, decorative cornices, and distinctive triangular motifs that blend beauty with functionality.

According to Saudi Press Agency, traditional construction expert Nasser Mubarak Al-Suqoor highlighted the use of a mixture of clay and straw, along with hardened natural materials, to create ornamental features that also protect the buildings from rain. Vibrant colors such as red, green, yellow, and black were sourced from plants, pomegranates, minerals, and natural extracts. Historic trade and pilgrimage routes additionally introduced exotic pigments to the region.

Traditionally, Najrani women, particularly young girls, were responsible for embellishing the interiors with colorful patterns, showcasing their artistic skills and reflecting the prosperity of their households.

Today, these remarkable structures continue to attract heritage enthusiasts and tourists, preserving a centuries-old legacy where architecture, nature, and human creativity unite to transform ordinary clay into timeless works of art.
