Northern Border University Researchers Develop Bio-Based Membranes to Remove Textile Dye from Water

A research team at northern border university has developed biocomposite membranes to treat water pollution:riendly materials based on chia seed mucilage and cetylpyridinium chloride.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the study focused on developing membranes capable of removing Alizarin Red S, a dye used in the textile industry. The results showed the membranes were highly efficient at absorbing organic pollutants from water, with an effective porous structure and antibacterial and antifungal properties.

The findings enhance the potential use of the developed membranes in water treatment and environmental disinfection applications by leveraging low-cost, sustainable, bio-based components that are more environmentally compatible.

The achievement is part of the university's efforts to support applied research and innovation in environmental sustainability and green technologies, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
