Accra:The Orionid meteor shower is expected to peak on Wednesday evening and continue until dawn on Thursday. This annual celestial event occurs as dust and debris from Halley's Comet enter Earth's atmosphere at high speeds, creating swift streaks of light across the sky.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the Noor Astronomy Association has stated that the Orionids are active from October to early November and can be viewed with the naked eye from dark locations. Some of the meteors may appear exceptionally bright or leave behind glowing trails.
Issa Al-Ghafili, President of the Noor Astronomy Association, highlighted that the meteor shower provides a chance to observe remnants of Halley's Comet, which last passed by Earth around 40 years ago and won't return for another 36 years. Each meteor represents a small piece of material left by the comet many years ago.
Al-Ghafili advised that the best time to view the meteor shower is between midnight and dawn, without the need for telescopes. He recommended choosing areas away from artificial lights and allowing eyes to adapt to the darkness for optimal viewing.
Although the waxing gibbous moon may hinder the visibility of fainter meteors this year, the association suggests observers focus on a broad section of the sky rather than solely on the constellation Orion, as meteors can appear far from the constellation itself.
