Ostrich Returns to Saudi Reserves Under Wildlife Reintroduction Program

Riyadh: Following an absence from the Arabian Peninsula, the ostrich is making a return to Saudi Arabia through targeted wildlife reintroduction initiatives across nature reserves, supporting biodiversity restoration and enabling the iconic bird to repopulate its historic desert habitats.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the flightless species ranks as the largest and heaviest living bird, standing up to 2.7 meters tall and weighing nearly 150 kilograms. It is also the fastest bird on land, capable of sprinting at speeds reaching 70 kilometers per hour. To evade predators in open desert terrain, the bird relies on powerful legs to cover long distances at speed, utilizing its wings solely for balance and rapid course changes while running.

Acutely adapted to arid grasslands and open plains, the ostrich combines its tall stature with sharp eyesight to identify threats from afar. Biologically, the bird also produces the largest egg in the animal kingdom, averaging roughly 1.5 kilograms, which is the equivalent volume of about 24 chicken eggs.

Reintroducing the ostrich to protected national reserves marks a key milestone in broader environmental programs aimed at rehabilitating native fauna and conserving endangered species across the Arabian Peninsula.
