Pigeon Towers in Makkah Region Highlight Architectural Heritage

Makkah:Pigeon towers in the villages and agricultural areas of the Makkah region stand as a testament to the architectural and agricultural heritage of the area. These structures reflect the ingenuity of local people in utilizing natural resources to satisfy daily needs, characterized by their unique geometric designs and architectural styles reminiscent of ancient castles and fortresses.

According to Saudi Press Agency, these towers, varying in height, are constructed with vertical designs featuring numerous small openings that allow pigeons to enter and exit. Inside, they offer cavities that serve as nesting and breeding spaces for the birds. Beyond merely housing pigeons, these towers play a crucial role in rural agricultural life by providing pigeon droppings used as natural fertilizer, thus enhancing soil fertility and productivity.

Farmer Swailem Al-Harbi highlighted the importance of pigeon towers in village agricultural life, explaining that they were built near farms and homes to create an ideal environment for pigeon raising. Al-Harbi emphasized that these structures are a cherished part of the community's collective memory and are vital to preserving the heritage for future generations. He noted that the architectural value of the towers lies in their tiered geometric configurations, thick walls, and strategically placed openings, which give them the appearance of defensive towers, despite their primary function of pigeon breeding.
