Qassim’s Rich Natural and Agricultural Diversity

Manila:Qassim Region features a diverse landscape, encompassing valleys, plains, and sand dunes that stretch across the area. The region is known for its natural meadows and pastures, alongside oases filled with palm trees and native plants. Environmental and agricultural initiatives are in place to preserve these natural assets, develop vegetation cover, and combat desertification.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Wadi Al-Rummah is one of Qassim's most prominent natural landmarks, along with Al-Thuwairat Sands, which are a part of its desert environment. Following rainfall, seasonal wild plants grow in these valleys and meadows, providing habitats for various wildlife species.

After rainfalls, the pastures and meadows become lush with native plants and shrubs like acacia, sidr, arta, and arfaj. These areas draw picnickers, camping enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers, and are essential for pastoral activities tied to the region's social and economic heritage. There is a need to protect these areas from woodcutting, overgrazing, and other damaging practices.

In the southern part of Qassim, Al-Mithnab's oases extend among the sands of Nafud Saafaiq, housing about 60 oases, with 32 particularly noted for their abundance of palm trees. The presence of water in this desert setting supports the growth of vegetation such as ghada and arta shrubs, showcasing the region's diverse natural habitats.

This natural diversity extends to agricultural activity, which is a crucial economic resource for the region. Latest statistics from the National Center for Palms and Dates indicate that Qassim has 10,867,246 palm trees, producing 584,127.80 tons of dates, with 13,403 agricultural holdings. The region also cultivates citrus fruits, grapes, pomegranates, vegetables, and seasonal crops, enhancing local production diversity and food security.

The Green Qassim Land initiative has planted 8,624,371 trees as part of efforts to develop vegetation cover and fight desertification. This initiative is implemented by the region's branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in collaboration with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, aiming to promote environmental sustainability and improve quality of life.
