Rare Tumor Extending from Uterus to Heart Removed in Single Surgery

Riyadh:King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSH) has successfully performed a complex surgery to remove a rare tumor that had extended from a woman's uterus into her heart. The patient, in her forties, initially experienced symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, upper abdominal pain, and abnormal uterine bleeding. Advanced imaging revealed the tumor had grown through major veins into the heart, posing significant risks to circulation and cardiac function.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, A multidisciplinary team of experts from various specialties, including cardiac surgery and gynecologic oncology, designed a comprehensive treatment plan. The surgery, lasting over 16 hours, involved removing the tumor that had spread from the pelvis to the heart, including its extension into the hepatic veins and other major blood vessels. The team also reconstructed the affected heart wall and blood vessels, completing the procedure in a single operation to avoid the need for multiple high-risk surgeries.

This approach minimized the risk of complications and supported a quicker recovery compared to traditional methods that often involve multiple surgeries and prolonged recovery times. The case highlights KFSH's capabilities in managing rare and complex medical conditions through coordinated expertise and innovative surgical techniques.

Furthermore, King Faisal Specialist Hospital has achieved significant recognition, being ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 12th globally among the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centers for 2026. It is also noted as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East according to Brand Finance 2025, and has been listed by Newsweek among the World's Best Hospitals 2025, the World's Best Smart Hospitals 2026, and the World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2026.
