Riyadh Advances Infrastructure Maintenance with AI Technology

Riyadh:Riyadh Municipality is employing advanced technologies, including robots, drones, and AI-powered vehicles, to gather accurate data on the condition of roads, bridges, and stormwater drainage networks. The integration of these technologies is aimed at speeding up maintenance processes and boosting the efficiency of field operations.

According to Saudi Press Agency, these innovations are part of the national goals set for the 'Year of Artificial Intelligence 2026,' which encourages government entities to widely adopt AI technologies. Riyadh Municipality has integrated these tools into its development plans to enhance operational efficiency, city management, and infrastructure readiness, ultimately improving services and the quality of life for its residents.

The municipality utilizes a pioneering software system for digital surveying and monitoring road conditions in Riyadh. This involves field vehicles equipped with advanced systems that collect data and images, which are then processed using AI to identify cracks and surface defects. This technology enables quick maintenance decisions, preventing issues from escalating.

Robots with specialized cameras are also used to inspect stormwater drainage networks. These devices collect and analyze data to provide detailed insights into the networks' conditions, facilitating preventive maintenance and timely interventions.

Additionally, the municipality employs smart technologies for inspecting suspension bridge cables in western Riyadh. Using drones equipped with cameras, 248 bridge cables are monitored, offering a thorough and precise assessment during maintenance activities to ensure the bridge's safety and sustainability.

These initiatives highlight Riyadh Municipality's commitment to digital transformation and the establishment of an AI-driven operational system, which enhances municipal asset management and supports the capital's sustainable urban development objectives.
