Saudi Arabia Engages Actively in WIPO’s 68th Assemblies

Geneva: Saudi Arabia participates in the 68th assemblies of the member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), held at its headquarters in Geneva during July, represented by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), with a delegation headed by the CEO of the authority Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Swailem, and several officials from SAIP.

According to Saudi Press Agency, this year's participation comes after several milestones on the international level by enhancing presence in various committees and assemblies, preparations to implement a number of events to strengthen Saudi Arabia's role in promoting and leading international cooperation.

During Saudi Arabia's speech by SAIP's CEO Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Swailem, highlighted on the legislative and operational leaps achieved by the Saudi intellectual property ecosystem, such as the geographical indications protection system approval and the copyright system updates to keep pace with the era of AI and the digital economy.

These efforts have resulted in an increase in performance indicators, as patent applications grew by 28% and trademarks by 23%, with SAIP achieving a score of 98.4% in the comprehensive quality index.

The speech also focused on joining treaties by depositing the instruments of accession to the Riyadh Design Law Treaty and the Madrid Protocol, in addition to launching an initiative under "Intellectual Property and Sports" in cooperation with WIPO to support sports investment. This also includes the continued support for developing countries through the Saudi Funds-in-Trust (SAFIT), alongside the celebration of examiners on November 11 in an initiative that aligned with the launch of a guiding manual for the ethics of the examiner.

The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, through its membership in WIPO and its annual participation, is keen on being present at the heart of the international event to keep pace with the latest practices and legislations, which reflects positively on the development of the national innovation and creativity environment.
