Saudi Arabia Enhances AI Governance with New Framework

Riyadh:Saudi Arabia has enhanced its national framework to govern the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) through new regulations, policies, and ethical principles. These initiatives aim to foster innovation while safeguarding rights and mitigating risks associated with AI.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), which leads these efforts since its establishment as the national authority for data and AI, has aligned the initiatives with Saudi Vision 2030. The goal is to position Saudi Arabia among the world‚¬„¢s leading data- and AI-driven economies.

The framework includes several key components AI Ethics Principles, AI Adoption Framework, Generative Artificial Intelligence Guidelines for Government, National Occupational Standard Framework for Data and AI, and the National AI Index (NAII). These tools establish governing principles such as fairness, transparency, explainability, privacy and security, accountability, and risk assessment throughout the lifecycle of AI systems.

Additionally, SDAIA has introduced the National AI Risk Management Framework. This practical guide offers a unified national approach for identifying, assessing, addressing, and monitoring AI-related risks. It enables both government and private-sector entities to adopt AI safely and responsibly. Given that AI systems present unique risks compared to conventional technologies, the framework is designed to anticipate and mitigate these risks. It features governance arrangements, controls, and standards to minimize harm, enhance institutional readiness, and protect rights, data, and privacy.
