Wathiq al-Hashemi: It Is Difficult for Iraq to Commit to Economic Sanctions against Iran

BAGHDAD, The head of the Iraqi Group for Strategic Studies, political expert Wathiq al-Hashemi stressed the difficulty of Iraq's commitment to US economic sanctions against Iran.

He told the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA)."The government is sending a delegation to Washington to discuss the matter and to exclude Iraq from the sanctions, which is important in the light of the great economic relations between the two neighboring countries,"

Hashemi added, "Iraq's commitment to sanctions is very difficult to have a multiplicity in Iraqi foreign policy and the presence of parties loyal to Iran."

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has said Iraq will send a delegation to the United States for an understanding on financial transactions in Iran under US sanctions.

"We are not part of sanctions and blockade on any other country," he said at his weekly press conference last Tuesday, added "We are committed to protecting the interests of our country."
