Stone Architecture Celebrates Harmony in Al-Baha

Al-Baha:The stone architecture of the Al-Baha Region is celebrated as a testament to the architectural ingenuity of its local inhabitants, coinciding with World Architecture Day, observed annually on the first Monday of October. This unique style developed as an adaptation to the region's challenging terrain and varied climate.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the architectural characteristics are prominently displayed in the heritage villages that dot the highlands and mountain slopes. Houses were built using stone and mud, forming a cohesive urban layout interlaced with narrow alleys and passageways.

House designs were adapted to the varying terrain, with some structures featuring two stories. The ground floor was typically used for sheltering livestock and storing fodder, while the upper floors served as living spaces for families.

Local stone was utilized for constructing walls, while timber was employed for ceilings, columns, and doors, demonstrating a practical use of available resources harmonious with the environment. The region's villages also boast historic fortresses, mosques, and traditional dwellings.

Efforts are currently being made to preserve and rehabilitate these villages and heritage sites, aiming to protect Al-Baha's architectural legacy and enable visitors to explore the area's rich heritage.
