Madinah: The National Energy Services Company (Tarshid), in collaboration with the Islamic University of Madinah, has completed Phase 2 of its energy efficiency retrofit project across the university's 43 buildings and facilities to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption, aligning operations with the highest international sustainability standards.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Board Member and Chief Executive Officer of Tarshid Waled bin Abdullah Al Ghreri stated that the company conducted comprehensive site surveys and technical assessments of the buildings and facilities included within the project scope. The findings highlighted significant opportunities to enhance energy efficiency and reduce consumption across the university's assets. He added that the project involved the implementation of 15 key energy efficiency measures, including the replacement of existing chiller units with higher-efficiency alternatives, the installation of cooling system monitoring and management controls, and the replacement of pumps with high-efficiency models equipped with variable frequency drives and advanced control systems. The project also included improving the performance of air handling units through the installation of variable frequency drive systems and advanced control solutions.
Additional measures comprised replacing packaged, split, and window air-conditioning units with higher-efficiency equipment, upgrading their associated control systems, replacing conventional lighting fixtures with high-efficiency LED lighting, and installing occupancy sensors to optimize lighting consumption across the university's buildings and facilities.
The comprehensive retrofit is projected to reduce the university's annual electricity consumption from approximately 39 million kWh to 26 million kWh, representing an estimated energy savings of 33%. Beyond the significant reduction in operational costs, these energy savings carry a profound environmental impact, equivalent to conserving more than 21,000 barrels of oil annually or planting approximately 124,000 seedlings each year.
