The Ministry of Environment disclosed the time limit for completing the mine management file in Iraq, referring to the areas of land that have been cleared and the size of the remaining ones.
Environment Minister Nizar Amidi said, in a statement to the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA), that "Iraq is committed, according to the Ottawa International Convention, to ending and clearing its lands of mines and war remnants by the end of the year 2028," noting that the Mine Action Strategy that recently launched centers around cleaning Iraq from this pollution even before the end of the officially scheduled period in 2028.
He added, "The government gives the climate change file a major priority, and for the first time, financial allocations for environment and mine projects have been included in the federal general budget for the years 23-24-2025 to carry out removal work, cleaning and clearing the lands," noting that "Iraq has accomplished the clearance of 58% of the area contaminated with mines and war remnants, and the remaining 42% will be finished with purification during the coming years, and it is estimated at 2149 square kilometers.
The minister stressed, "Providing a safe environment to attract investments requires a clean floor free of waste, war pollutants and mines, so we are keen to sustain the momentum of work and cooperation with international partners, and we have local partners in the national effort from the Ministries of Defense and Interior and the Popular Mobilization, as well as other international organizations that support Iraq's efforts to join the international agreement in Ottawa. / End
