Al-Hutaima Crater in Hail: Geological Landmark Tells Story of Northern Saudi Arabia’s Volcanic History

Hail: Hail Region is home to several unique geological landmarks that reflect a natural history spanning millions of years, most notably Al-Hutaima Crater, located east of Salma Mountain in the far northeastern Arabian Shield near Taba Village. The crater is one of the most significant geological witnesses to ancient volcanic activity in northern Saudi Arabia.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the crater, measuring 1.25 km in diameter and 110 meters in depth, rises amid diverse terrain where mountains and volcanic plains intersect, forming an exceptional natural landscape that combines scientific and aesthetic value. The landscape was shaped by ancient volcanic activity that helped define the region's geological character.

Al-Hutaima Crater's unique geological formation reflects multiple phases of natural transformation. It is surrounded by dark volcanic rocks formed by lava flows, while natural sediments at its base have been shaped by erosion and weathering over thousands of years, creating a striking visual contrast across the site.

Hail Region continues to strengthen its position as a natural and geological tourism destination by leveraging its unique sites to enrich knowledge of Earth's history and support sustainable tourism development.
