Called for by KSA, OIC to Convene Emergency Meeting Tomorrow to Discuss Repercussions of Burning Quran Incident in Sweden

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as the Chairman of the current session of the Islamic Summit and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has called for an urgent open-end meeting of the OIC's Executive Committee to be held tomorrow (Sunday) in Jeddah. The purpose of the meeting is to address the consequences of the recent incident involving the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran, which occurred in Sweden on the first day of Eid Al-Adha.

The meeting is scheduled to discuss appropriate measures in response to these deplorable acts, aiming to convey a united stance against the desecration of the Holy Quran. The OIC has emphasized the gravity of such acts, which undermine mutual respect and harmony among people and run counter to international efforts to promote values of tolerance, moderation, and rejection of extremism.

Furthermore, the Organization has urged governments to take effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such behaviour. It has strongly condemned these repeated despicable attacks and any attempts to disrespect the sanctity of the Holy Quran, as well as other Islamic values, symbols, and sanctities.

The OIC reiterates that all states are bound, under the Charter of the United Nations, to promote and encourage universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, regardless of race, sex, language, or religion. It emphasizes the importance of exercising the right to freedom of expression responsibly, following relevant international human rights laws and instruments. Additionally, the OIC highlights the significance of fostering dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among religions, cultures, and civilizations to promote peace and harmony worldwide.
