Jazan Region Boasts 566 Native Plant Species, Reports NCVC

Doha:Jazan The Jazan Region is home to a remarkable 566 native plant species, constituting 24.74% of Saudi Arabia's plant diversity, as highlighted by the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC). The NCVC has noted significant improvements in the region's vegetation, rangelands, and forests.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the diverse plant life in Jazan includes 377 herbs, 86 shrubs, 49 trees, and 54 sub-shrubs distributed across more than 113,200 hectares at 113 sites. The region is characterized by seven endemic, 12 rare, and 22 invasive species within three ecological zones, featuring 23 dominant plant communities. These native species are well-suited to the local climate and require significantly less water than non-native plants.

In efforts to enhance the region's greenery, approximately 27.9 million trees have been planted in collaboration with the National Greening Program, surpassing the program's 2030 target of 17.5 million trees. Forests now cover more than 267,200 hectares, accounting for 19.9% of Jazan's area. To sustain these forests, one million native seedlings have been planted, alongside over 2.8 million mangrove seedlings in the Farasan Islands and along the southern Red Sea coast.

The NCVC has also implemented grazing management initiatives to restore rangelands, including designated grazing periods, areas, and protected zones over 2,014 hectares of Al-Khabari rangelands and three other sites. The center has evaluated 11 rangeland locations covering more than 8,700 hectares to determine priority sites and grazing potential.

Enhancements have been made to the region's 22 national parks, which span 26,221.56 hectares, through new operating models, a unified visual identity, and signage. Development plans are underway for Wadi Lajab National Park in Al-Raith Governorate, with seasonal investment opportunities available at 21 sites.

Since 2025, volunteering initiatives for planting have engaged over 3,000 volunteers in planting more than 104,000 trees, with an economic value exceeding SAR208,000. These efforts align with the objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative, as supported by the NCVC's projects in Jazan.
