UAE MP Mohammed Ahmed Al-Yamahi has been elected speaker of the Arab Parliament for a two-year term, securing 53 votes against his competitor, Libyan MP Dr. Abdul Salam Nasiyah, who received eight votes.
The election took place during a procedural session at the Secretariat General of the Arab League headquarters. The session, presided over by Egyptian House of Representatives member Yousry Al-Maghazi – the parliament’s oldest member – focused on electing the new speaker.
Al-Yamahi, who serves as a member of the UAE’s Federal Council and Vice Speaker of the Arab Parliament, will lead the body for the upcoming term. Further elections will be held to appoint vice speakers, committee heads, and their deputies.
