National Water Company Launches Campaign to Combat Household Water Leaks

Riyadh:First paragraph of the news story.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the National Water Company (NWC) has introduced a national awareness campaign titled 'It's Easy to Detect Leaks in Our Homes Ourselves.' This initiative is designed to assist customers in identifying both visible and hidden leaks within their homes through straightforward methods, aiming to transform water conservation from a mere public motto into an everyday practice. The campaign supports the broader goals of water conservation and rational consumption.

NWC highlighted that this campaign is part of a broader responsibility and partnership initiative between the Kingdom's water service provider and its customers. It focuses on educating the public about the most common sources of leaks. The Water and Wastewater Services Guide, issued by the Saudi Water Authority, specifies in Article 2 (General Provisions) that the responsibility for internal leaks within properties rests with the consumer or service requester. The meter is identified as the point where the service provider's responsibility concludes, thus making regular home inspections beneficial for consumers.

The company disclosed that surveys and field studies indicate high water consumption is largely attributed to two main factors: internal leaks, which account for 93% of the cases, and outdated property data and unit divisions. The 'Rasshid!' campaign highlights that the most frequent internal leaks occur at the float valve and neck of the underground tank, as well as the flush valve in restrooms.

NWC further stated that fixing leaks and installing approved water-saving devices can reduce water usage by up to 46% and cut bills by as much as 60%. Water-saving fittings with the 'Water Conservation' label alone can help reduce average consumption by approximately 30%.

The company urged customers to perform simple periodic checks by closing all water outlets in the home and monitoring the meter connection, as well as the ground and overhead tanks, to ensure no water is flowing. Customers are also encouraged to learn step-by-step leak detection methods via NWC's digital channels, emphasizing that timely leak repairs can prevent water wastage and protect customers from incurring high bills.
