Rescue ship brings 339 boat migrants to southern Italy

The Geo Barents sea rescue vessel operated by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has brought 339 migrants ashore in the southern Italian port city of Brindisi, the organization said Friday.

The ship had taken 440 migrants aboard after rescuing them from small boats in the Mediterranean early on Wednesday in a complicated 11-hour operation, dpa reported.

Italian authorities took about 100 people onto an Italian navy ship before the Geo Barents arrived in Brindisi.

Before leaving for shore one person had to be flown to Malta by helicopter due to severe dehydration and three people were being treated for broken limbs or signs of burns, according to Italian news agency ANSA.
