Saudi Arabia Affirms Arab States’ Backing for UN’s Peace and Security Efforts at Candidate Hearing

New york: On behalf of the Arab Group, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia delivered a statement during the hearing of UN Secretary-General candidate Mar­a Fernanda Espinosa reaffirming Arab States' support for the United Nations and its role in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil expressed the Arab Group's commitment to working with the next secretary-general to strengthen the organization's effectiveness and uphold its principles.

The statement raised a number of key issues, including safeguarding respect for international law, enhancing the United Nations' role in supporting the Palestinian cause and the implementation of relevant international resolutions, and ensuring continued support for UN entities, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

It further underscored the need to address the United Nations' financial challenges while strengthening support for developing countries and accelerating the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
