Riyadh: A disaster medicine session at the 11th Scientific Assembly of the Saudi Society of Emergency Medicine (SASEM 2026) discussed the latest challenges in responding to disasters and major incidents. The session explored ways to strengthen healthcare preparedness and develop the skills of medical professionals and leaders to handle emergencies.

According to Saudi Press Agency, discussions covered leadership and resuscitation during mass-casualty incidents and examined decision-making when resources are limited and casualty numbers increase. The session also addressed responses to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incidents, as well as explosives-related emergencies. Participants explored the future of disaster medicine as crises become more complex and interconnected.

The session highlighted stronger integration between prehospital ambulance services and disaster-response systems, along with support for evidence-based practices. Medical care for people exposed to nuclear and radiological hazards was also addressed, from decontamination and assessment to treatment and follow-up.
