Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein stressed the importance of restoring relations between Iraq and Cuba and reopening their Embassies in Baghdad and Havana.
A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Hussein met with Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Anas Maria Chapman, on the sidelines of his participation in the Water Summit, whose meetings are held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The Minister, according to the statement, congratulated Cuba on its Presidency this year of the Group of (77) and China, referring to the historical and traditional relations that bring together the two countries and Iraq's desire to strengthen them in all aspects, especially economic, commercial, scientific and health, as well as political through multiple diplomacy in international organizations, stressing the importance of restoring bilateral relations between the two countries and reopening their Embassies in Baghdad and Havana, taking into account the history of these relations and building on it for the purpose of working on what can be done to strengthen these relations in the future in order to achieve common interests.
For her part, Maria stressed the desire of the government and people of Cuba to strengthen relations with Iraq due to the status it enjoys in the region and international and regional organizations, as well as seeking to resume economic and trade relations between the two countries, noting the importance of exchanging experiences and best practices in many sectors, including agriculture and climate change solutions, and management of water resources as well as the health care system, pointing to the importance of achieving mutual visits between the two countries, and invited the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to attend the Summit of Innovation, Science and Technology, which will be held at the level of Foreign Ministers next September.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked the invitation to attend the summit and visit Cuba to hold meetings that would strengthen relations between the two countries and set the agenda for these meetings to include the economic, commercial and environmental aspects, explaining that the missions of Iraq and Cuba to the United Nations in New York will follow up on starting steps to restore relations and then work on the reopening of the two Embassies.”
