Riyadh:Al-Zabeel is a traditional tool intricately linked to palm trees and the date harvest season. Historically essential to daily life in agricultural communities, Al-Zabeel is a container crafted primarily from palm fronds and leaves. Typically circular or oval, it features a stable base and may include multiple handles for ease of transport.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the creation of Al-Zabeel involves traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations. This lightweight yet durable container was used for collecting, transporting, and carrying dates, especially during the palm harvest season when families gathered to harvest their date crops.

The production of Al-Zabeel involves several stages, starting with the preparation of raw materials. Suitable palm fronds are collected, cleaned of impurities, and exposed to sunlight until they dry and whiten. Alternatively, they can be softened with water to enhance flexibility for shaping.

Craftspeople skillfully braid strips of palm leaves by hand to form tightly bound strips or bundles based on the desired design. The braided leaves are then shaped in a circular or graduated manner until Al-Zabeel takes its final form. The parts are secured and stitched together using traditional tools and ropes made from palm fiber or leaves. In some designs, two or more side handles are added to facilitate carrying.
