Riyadh: Integrated national efforts to prevent drowning have contributed to a 31% decline in drowning-related deaths across the Kingdom since the adoption of the National Drowning Prevention Policy in 2021 through the end of 2025, while averting an estimated economic burden of approximately SAR1.33 billion.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the announcement coincides with the Kingdom's observance of World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25 each year, following Cabinet Resolution No. 44 approving the official observance of the occasion. The Kingdom has developed a comprehensive national drowning prevention system led by the Public Health Authority (Weqaya) through the Joint Standing Committee for Drowning Prevention, bringing together 13 government entities to coordinate efforts and direct preventive interventions toward the groups most at risk.

During the 2026 World Health Assembly in Geneva, Weqaya showcased the Kingdom's experience, highlighting how national policies have been translated into measurable public health outcomes. Weqaya also stressed the importance of adhering to water safety guidelines, including the direct supervision of children, securing swimming pools, swimming only in designated areas, and learning swimming skills to help reduce drowning risks.
