The MoD Participates In The UN Meetings On The Restriction Of Lethal Autonomous Weapons

A delegation from the Ministry of Defense, headed by Head of the Engineering Support Department, Lieutenant General Hatem Al-Maksousi, and members of the Ministries of Environment and Foreign Affairs, participated in the meeting of the Governmental Experts Group on Combat Weapons System (LWAS) on Restricting Lethal Autonomous Weapons, which was held in Geneva.

The Iraqi delegation participating in the meetings pointed to the threat posed by weapons and advanced technology to the lives of defenseless citizens, stressing the need for the international community to take into account the damage resulting from the possibility of these weapons being leaked and reaching terrorist gangs, pointing to the risks that may result from hacking their operational systems, which would undoubtedly lead to humanitarian disasters.

The delegation affirmed its call for the adoption of a legally binding instrument that would prohibit and restrict emerging technology in the field of lethal autonomous weapons within the framework of the Convention on the Prohibition of Conventional Weapons.
