Eastern region: Eastern Region is witnessing rapid growth in the number of beekeepers and apiaries that produce some of the finest types of natural honey, most notably the mangrove honey. The region is renowned for its production of this honey, which beekeepers harvest from the mangrove forests that stretch along the coastline, extending over 610 kilometers from north of Al-Khafji Governorate to south of Salwa in Al-Ahsa Governorate.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture Branch in Eastern Region Eng. Fahd Al-Hamzi explained that the number of beehives in the region is estimated at more than 4,000, distributed among the region's 44 amateur and professional beekeepers, who produce more than 21 tons of honey annually.
He pointed out that beekeepers in the region are working to sell their produce in local markets through exhibitions organized by the ministry's branch in various cities and governorates of the region, as well as through e-commerce platforms and their own shops. He explained that there is a significant opportunity for beekeepers to export their products to the Gulf and international markets, given the rising demand for high-quality natural honey and related products.
Eng. Al-Hamzi emphasized that bees are a fundamental pillar in achieving environmental sustainability through their essential role in preserving biodiversity, which contributes to the continuity of ecosystems, ultimately leading to healthy biodiversity and sustainable environmental development.
